Wengen Hotel Help please!

As you can see by my recent posts, I am planning a trip to Switzerland..Thinking about 3 nights in Wengen, 2 nights in Thun and 1 night in Zurich....

I am looking at the Krone hotel in Thun and you all are helping with Zurich but now I need help with Wengen...I see that there is a SLH hotel but gets some off reviews. I was set on Regina and the last few reviews of that hotel are less then glowing..

I know you have to take some of these reviews with a grain of salt..However, I am asking your advice>>>>> john

Hi johnb,

Doesn't the Regina have a nightclub in its basement? I would worry about the noise.

If you want a four-star, I think the Caprice would be the right choice. But I've stayed at the 3-star Alpenrose twice (www.alpenrose.ch) and absolutely adore it. It sits on a ledge down from the village, overlooking the valley. Really superb.

Good luck!

We stayed at the Regina. I don't recommend it. Old, outdated furnishings; caters to its repeat clientele and business groups; service was just ok. In such a beautiful setting, you ought to be able to find somewhere better to stay. I see a lot of recommendations for the Alpenrose.

I had friends who chose the Regina over the Alpin Rose two years go, they were not happy. They didn't like the hotel or the staff.
I, as well as many others, love he Alpin Rose.

Not on your list, but my favorite hotel in Wengen is the Bellevue.

Another vote for the Alpenrose...

swandav2000 -- Perhaps you can answer this question for me. I was looking at the alpenrose site and its reservations and there were three boxes to check. They said please make an offer, please make a reservation, and please send a brochure.

Can you tell what the "please make an offer" box is all about?

kappa1Feb 5th, 2009 05:02 PM

> "please make an offer"

Usually you check it when you just want to know availability/rates without making a reservation yet.

swandav2000Feb 8th, 2009 09:00 PM

For sallyky,

Sorry I didn't answer sooner; I was out of town (in Zuerich, yahoo!).

But kappa1 has answered your question -- one box if you want them to make an offer, one box if you're definite on your dates and this particular hotel, and one box if you only want a brochure. I would bet (haven't reserved with this hotel in a number of years) that the "reserve now" box will lead you to a page where you input your credit card info.

Have fun in Wengen!

I would like to visit one or two small villages from Wengen by cog, cable or train for 1/2 day maybe sightsee and have lunch..Any suggestions..was thinking about Murren for one? We will be going in September/October away from the madning crowds!

Need to thank you all in advance!

gregFeb 9th, 2009 10:53 AM

Just a note on Alpenrose. As someone else noted it is located down from the village. For check-in/-out, they will send a golf cart to the train station when you call.

However, it is not a good choice if you have mobility issue going up/down a short but steep hill.

Murren is a tight 1/2 day trip from Wengen. It is on the other side of the valley. The gondola from Stechelberg to Murren provides a spectacular view, however.

Kleine Scheidegg or Grindelwald are easier to get to. Of course, these is Jung Frau.

greg, are there little villages where you mention? A place to have lunch and hike?

I was wondering how much it would cost to go from Wengen to the top of mountain..Someone said it cost $300? really????

How much just to go to Kleine?

again, thank you!!!!!!!!!

Hi johnb,
This website: http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en? will help you determine the time & cost involved as well as method of transport available for all of the Jungfrau. The individual trips can really add up so maybe a pass would be good for you.

There are also two passes available, as well as more that I'm probably not aware of, that cover transportation.

One is the Jungfrau Pass, available at any train station. Info is at this site: www.jungfraubahn.ch. I believe it is 200 SFR.

The other is the Berner Oberland pass which is around 224 SFR. Each pass is a little bit different.

Good luck with your planning,
Michele

We loved the Alpenrose! I would definitely recommend it.

One of our favourite hikes was when we took the gondola to Mannlichen and then walked the Apfelkuchlein trail to Brandegg. It ends at a lovely alpine restaurant, the hike is easy and their apfelkuchlein (apple fritters in vanilla sauce) were unbelievable.

Very easy to do from Wengen.

Enjoy Switzerland!
