police investigated a deadly crash. dylan one works there and heard it happened at the intersection of bosworth and diamond streets just before 3 in the afternoon, i saw a truck went past and look at the screen. >> and so people rushing over to the corner and i what a peek outside. so ladies, what's on the ground? >> when police arrived, medics tried to save the woman hit, but she died at the scene. police have not released any information about the victim. the driver of the box truck stayed to cooperate with the investigation. he was visibly upset on scene. he was devastated. so yeah. >> a prayer. >> we go to the truck was carrying hospital beds. it belongs to the company. hill-rom. we reached out to them but did not hear back. kron 4 reviewed security video we obtained from a nearby market showing the truck turning right and hitting the woman walking in the crosswalk. police are using that video to figure out what led up to the crash. they say drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors. once

police cleared the scene, people dropped off flowers at the site of the crash. the supervisor for this district, rafael mandelman wrote on x saying, quote, our hearts are with the victim and her loved ones got be really careful. careful. oh, my god. janela kuz lives nearby. she says this tragedy has her extra worried about pedestrian safety. >> car still respect, stop signs, some tax even slow down to just plow right on through. look who says this advice for pedestrians. it's making eye contact and making sure it's clear before you cross super important. >> police spent more than 3 hours of the scene investigating. they're still trying to figure out the cause of the crash. i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. >> and a woman and child are hit in a crosswalk and redwood city. this happened yesterday morning on harris avenue and duane street nearequoyah high school. investigators say the driver did remain at the scenanis cooperating and

one of the girl were taken to the hospital, but they were not severely injured. time now is 704. and developing news this morning, 6 people have been displaced because their home caught fire in san jose. the fire department, as you can see, responded quickly here when this home caught fire last night. it's located on monterey road about 3 miles north of coyote creek golf club. >> everybody got out, ok, but the home was damaged, 2 greenhouses and out buildings as well. >> 705, is the time. alright, look at this. investigators say this is about $9,000 worth of items that were stolen from 3 stores. the contra costa county sheriff's office says they recently responded to a shoplifting call at a store out in bay point 3 people were spotted trying to get away as deputies pulled into the parking lot, track them all down. have all been arrested and booked into jail and all the stolen items you see on the screen were returned to their respective stores. meanwhile, and berkeley, 12

people were caught in one day for shoplifting. berkeley police say it was on july 27th that they were patrolling businesses near the target on university avenue and over the course of several hours, officers arrested suspects who stolen everything from candy to clothing, even a microwave. police say several people who are arrested also had outstanding warrants for other crimes. time now 705, in and in the south bay, governor newsom is going to be holding a news conference to introduce. >> a bill on the heels of his controversial encampment sweeps. the governor is going to be joined by lawmakers and very officials to talk more about a piece of legislation that aims to combat retail crime in california. that news conference is a 10 o'clock this morning at the home depot in san jose. on the peninsula. i meet up to sell all watch quickly turned into an armed robbery and an attempted carjacking. 3 people were arrested. what happened is the victim called san mateo police

after this happened tuesday night at the marina plaza shopping center where the victim had arranged to sell and expensive watch on facebook marketplace. and when he got there with the watch, the 3 people showed up the suspects, they assaulted him, pointed a gun at him and stole everything. and then they even tried to steal his car, but they were unsuccessful. the police ended up catching all 3 of those suspects shortly after this happen. and the high value of the item they say is likely why they picked this victim. >> social media has mean so many things so easy both for good people and people that want to do bad so just always remember that. and always remember that there is a little bit of a risk if you're going to meet a stranger. and, you know, exchange money in exchange goods. >> san mateo police remind the community that there are safe exchange places, for example, at the police department. parking lot right there. you

can meet for an online sale. >> okay. former santa clara county fairground officials now accused of taking kickbacks worth thousands of dollars in da's office is pressing charges now of bribery and extortion. crawford's michael thomas has more from the newsroom. michael, good morning, everyone. the santa clara county district attorney's office says it was actually the county fairgrounds marketing director that was running this kickback scheme. at one point, they say she was allegedly collecting. >> up to $4,000 a month, a delay of one ellis's spars. the is her name. she was the events and marketing director for the santa clara county fairgrounds. but she's no longer there and is now facing % felony charges of bribery and extortion. officials say last september they got word of this scheme from a whistleblower and decided to investigated and they soon learned that the former director was actually asking a security company for part of its pay from its contract with the fairgrounds saying that the owner of the security company refused to pay at first. but in response, a director allegedly accused the company's guards of sleeping

on the job, putting its contract that risk. she then allegedly offered to intervene and save the company from losing its contract with the fairgrounds, but only in exchange for some cash. the da says it was summer of 2020 and because of covid in an economic excuse me, economic uncertainties. the security company decided to pay up. and officials say at one point ripping up to $4,000. but it started off at about $2500 a month. now we did reach out to the fairgrounds management team who sent us a statement saying that they're working with the da's office and will continue to do so. but they say there's no place for this or ay type of behavior like it at the fairgrounds, adding that the director resigned back in may saying in part, quote, we are dedicated to upholding the proud traditions of santa clara county fairgrounds in ensuring that it remains a place where families can create happy memories for years to come. the da's office says that the former director is expected to turn herself in and could be facing up to 4 years in jail

>> didn't have a certain qualification. so thursday, this plane from san francisco was supposed to land in jackson hole, wyoming. however, the pilot says the jackson hole airport require special qualifications to land in that mountainous area. the pilot apparently didn't have that rating. had to be rerouted to salt lake city, utah, where another pilot with the right qualifications took over the flight and took it to its destination, did not realize that you have to have experience various terrains and stuff like >> 7.90, we're we're for the passengers. yeah, he's 7.19, right now. and the san francisco superior court has dismissed dozens of cases because of a backlog that was caused by the covid pandemic. this is a disturbing story now. the district attorney and the public defender's office are both responding. crawford's lezla gooden has the story. >> 70 criminal cases were dismissed in san francisco superior court on thursday after a judge ruled that their

courtroom covid delays were deemed unconstitutional. the misdemeanor cases include crimes, domestic violence in duis, about half-dozen victims who spoke as a public defender. >> it doesn't mean that we leave our humanity at the door. obviously they felt that they were victims and obviously i they i felt for them. but at the end of the day, the folks who to protect the rights of the courts and the district attorneys office and the public defenders job is to protect rights of our clients. >> the public defender's office and the district attorneys say that courts are at fault for not trying these cases in a timely manner. some cases were pushed back by months and years everywhere else throughout the covid has no longer been an excuse and san francisco. they tried to rely on that one a little too long in the court of appeals no more. and that is what we have been saying all along. we want our client's constitutional rights protected.

passengers on a flight from sfo to rome. >> ended up being second united flight this week. it was headed there had to be diverted on wednesday. a spokesperson tells kron 4 that this delay was because a passenger on that flight had a medical incident on board. so they ended up having to land safely and canada and go on eventually to rome. but in this same week, remember, we told you a couple of days ago that a flight from as a voter around had to be diverted to sacramento. that was on tuesday. that one was because of mechanical issues. for your health. researchers find that students who are chronically absent from school are much more likely to struggle with mental health challenges. emotional symptoms among teenage girls were especially linked with missing a lot of school. one solution is to have constant check ins with students who may miss school so that they can offer resources and see what's happening, offer mental health specialist and that type of thing. and also maybe it is,

people in the state have that app as far as id on it. google apple, much more popular. not exactly sure when it will hit the ground running, but once it does, it'll work just like apple pay. back to you. all right. thanks a lot. 7.33, is the time. >> in the east bay, a woman in oakland, unfortunately has died after a fire broke out in a garage. this is video from the citizen app. fire crews say the flames broke out tuesday night at this garage on 26 avenue by foothill boulevard. they think the victim was living in her car inside that garage. they're not quite sure how the fire started. they did notice a grill in the garage that looking to see if that's connected somehow we'll let you know if reveal that. meanwhile, oakland police are also investigating an apartment fire now as arson. 38 people now left without a home after a dumpster fire spread to their apartment building wednesday, crews managed to save 26 of the units before them were completely destroyed. fire

officials had to evacuate everybody, though, because they're concerned about the structural integrity now at the entire building. in san francisco to people and 2 dogs are displaced after their home caught fire. this happened on jersey street near diamond heights and the castro district in there in the video you can see the response. firefighters were able to put that fire out fairly quickly. they said they kept it from spreading to the houses on either side. >> san jose officials are trying to assure business owners that they are doing what they can to protect them from crime. but there has a lot of councilmember domingo listen. san jose police officers here visiting sunny farm restaurant in the evergreen neighborhood. and we've told you about how this restaurant was targeted. multiple times and the owners of a broken into 6 times in 2 years open the most recent burglary happened earlier this week. >> the last 2 or 7 days apart.

for hundreds of bills at the state capitol lawmakers decided the fate of more than 800 bills during what's called suspense day. at the same time outside, you can see activists gathered at the capitol to make their final push to get certain bills that they support it across the finish line. the committee's took a piece legislation that in some cases would require the state to choose which bills will move forward in the process. a b, 2.70, also known as the california fair elections act along with several others were deemed too costly for the state. and so they died in committee as california grapples with a projected multi-billion dollar deficit for years to come. >> we have to balance our budget every single year, like every other, like every family who sits in the kitchen table in about your checkbook. that's what we have to do here in the state. it's what the electorate demands of us. so we have to make tough calls. >> lawmakers on the committee passed a number of other bills, though, including a bill that would prevent medical debt from being included in credit scores.
